4 Tips and Reminders for Having a Fun and Safe Halloween
Halloween is a fun day of costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating, but there are several things you should keep in mind to stay safe and have fun!
1. Costume Comfort
You definitely want to impress people with your costume, but sometimes that involves making your costume a major pain to move around in. When designing and working on your costume, always keep in mind the fact that you will need to move around in it. It can be easy to settle for something that looks nice when you set it up in your home, but later either falls apart or ends up making your body ache somewhere.
Don't forget about your need to move, and try to strike a happy balance between visually impressive and functionally movable. Even candy won't stop your children from complaining about a cumbersome costume (even if it was their idea).
2. Stay in Groups!
Halloween involves a lot of walking, so you'll want to be sure to stick together as much as possible so no one gets lost. It can be easy for someone to wander off on their own, so make sure you regularly check to see if the whole group is together. You may want to consider coming up with a group call or signal as a way to do a quick head count.
Also, this is fairly obvious, but make sure to trick or treat in a neighborhood that you are familiar with in order to be aware of your location and direction in case you need to track someone down.
3. Unwrapped Treats
Everyone hears this every year, but for good reason. You will want to have both you and your kids avoid eating your treats until you return home so that you can check which ones are safe to eat. As a rule of thumb, avoid eating anything that is open or has signs of being tampered with!
4. Light It Up!
With a lot of people both walking and driving on Halloween night, it's very important to make sure that you're visible and noticeable to drivers around the neighborhood. Encourage kids, especially those with dark costumes, to carry around some form of light with them such as a flashlight or glow stick (which can even be used as part of a costume). You can also add on reflective things such as tape or stickers to costumes to help reflect more light during the night time.
While these are certainly not comprehensive, these small tips can go a long way towards preventing a not-so-fun Halloween nightmare. Be sure to keep them in mind and let others know, as the more people aware the better.
